In a first day in his new role, Zohran Mamdani vowed to “reinvent” New York City, ushering in “a fresh chapter” and an bold commencement to his administration.

An Unprecedented Figure

The new democratic socialist, who just a year ago remained a relatively obscure state assemblyman, now stands as the city's first mayor of South Asian descent. He also made history by being the first to be take the oath of office using the Qur'an.

“A opportunity of this kind comes rarely and rarer still is it that the citizens whose grasp the controls for transformation,” Mamdani added.

Rejecting counsel to lower expectations, the mayor was emphatic: “I will do no such thing. The only expectation I seek to change is that of modest goals. Beginning today we will govern with courage and vision.”

Adhering to Democratic Socialist Principles

Mamdani openly embraced his political ideology. “I was elected as a socialist leader and I will lead as one. I will not forsake my ideals for worry of being called radical,” he proclaimed to an enthusiastic response.

The inauguration was a two-part event, starting with a late-night oath-taking in a disused subway station. He was formally sworn in on the steps of city hall by political ally Bernie Sanders, who spoke of Mamdani's election as a victory over the status quo.

An Ambitious Policy Agenda

Mamdani now undertakes one of the most demanding jobs in American politics, with a plan including:

• Universal childcare
• No-cost bus transit
• A cap on rents for approximately 1 million households
• A pilot of municipally-operated grocery stores

The projected $10 billion expense of these initiatives may prove difficult to fund. Mamdani has vowed to tax more heavily the city's top earners and corporations. However, as a city subject to the state government, he will require the backing of Governor Kathy Hochul.

Navigating External Dynamics

The new mayor also faces concern from some Jewish New Yorkers concerned about his past comments regarding Israel. Tensions were highlighted during the transition when a senior aide resigned over offensive past social media posts.

Mamdani has attempted to smooth over these concerns by convincing Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to stay on, avoiding the appearance of losing a top Jewish official.

On the national stage, former President Donald Trump has labeled Mamdani a “socialist” and warned of withholding federal funding. Despite this, a recent encounter between the two was reportedly surprisingly productive.

The Basic Challenges of Leadership

Traditionally, New York mayors are judged on their success in delivering essential functions: trash collection, reducing the rat infestation, fixing potholes, and making sure smooth transit service.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams touted his team's anti-crime efforts, citing historically low numbers of homicides and gun violence in 2025, with 301 homicides reported.

As his administration begins, Mamdani and his wife will move from their Queens apartment to the historic mayoral residence. The outgoing mayor offered a unusual piece of advice about a supposed friendly ghost in the home, which allegedly only haunts those who fail to “do right by the city.”

Mamdani ended his address with a direct declaration: “The work has only just begun.”
