It's the end of a long-standing era for long-running series, with Toei Animation announcing a revised release plan for the beloved series, which has been airing for more than 25 years and featured dozens of non-canon storylines. Starting in the new year, after the current storyline concludes, the anime will take a three-month break until spring, when the next major arc kicks off.
Updated Production Plan
From now on, the series will produce two seasons every year for a maximum of two dozen installments. Toei explains this will enable the anime to “explore further into the heart of the ONE PIECE world — including more material, tempo, and pacing of the source material.” Yet, producers conclude by hinting at “exciting surprises” during the series' break, which means additional related projects, such as the upcoming live-action adaptation, scheduled to debut in the interim.
Previous Hiatus Benefits
The One Piece anime had a half-year pause that started in October 2024 and concluded in April 2025. The intermission was for the production team to improve the animation quality and allow the manga to build a lead to avoid a rushed adaptation and lengthy recap episodes. The show greatly benefited from this break, and it has managed to deliver viewers with countless fight scenes, superior graphics, and reduced non-canon content than ever before.
Adopting Modern Trends
Although some recap episodes sprouted up during this season, the positive effects of this new production schedule greatly outweigh the odd pause in the action. This also gives the manga, which is currently in the thick of the latest arc, to gain more ground on the adaptation. Per the news, this may result in a single installment of the series adapting one chapter, with some alternatively handling more material or additional to compensate for scheduling.
This concludes of an era for Japanese animation, as the epic saga is the final major title to ditch the traditional method of production, which prioritized airing for almost the entire year. This explains why iconic series such as Naruto, and of course itself have numerous side stories, and the standard of the art can vary widely between one episode and the following. Today, series creation is organized in cours, with one or two maximum coming out each annually, allowing for improved visuals and more faithfulness to the original work.
